Dumoine River, Québec, July 29 - Aug. 2, 2005
Here's the reason you didn't hear from me this last week. We were 30 miles or so north of Deep River, far beyond the web, for 5 days of camping and fishing. Our dear friend Sylvie invited us up to her dad's camp on the Dumoine River for the August long-weekend. As always, we had a marvellous time that even the mosquitoes could not spoil. The is more or less the view from the door of our tent, 2:56 p.m., 29 July 2005.
When I drive the boat I like to imagine I'm Charlie Allnut (Humphrey Bogart) in The African Queen, struggling against the Germans and saving the prim and proper missionary, Rose Sayer, who, eventually, finds me charming and attractive despite my bad habits and rough edges.
There is something divine about the hour or so before sunset on the river.
As usual, Louise caught the first fish, the last fish, the biggest fish, and the most fish. That's our trapper friend and guide Marcel driving the boat.
A 3 lb. pickerel, also known hereabouts as walleye (Sander vitreus, formerly Stizostedion vitreum), 8:32 p.m., 31 July 2005.
